I just finished reading Tarantino's much awaited script for the upcoming "Inglorious Bastards". I'm still soaking it in...and I THINK I liked it. Its not what I was expecting...in fact its quite a bit different. More "Cinema Paradisio" than "Dirty Dozen" I think. Thats not exactly a bad thing. Without venturing to far into "spoiler" territory, the basic plot is this: A young french girls family is massacred at the start by Hitlers Elite SS officer known as "The Jew Hunter". She escapes into the nearby woods. Cut to our first meeting of the elite US Commando unit who operate behind enemy lines known as "The Bastards" Mostly Jewish American Soldiers led by a Tennesse Hillbilly Lt. They not only kill all germans on sight...they "scalp" them Apache Indian style and keep their trophies on their belts. If they elect to let an unfortunate German Soldier "escape" to live another day...they first ENGRAVE a swatztika into their forehead with their huge knives so he can be easily recognized as a Nazi. The young french girl finds refuge at a small movie theater owned by a mysterious French woman and her Negro projectionist. Eventually..the paths of the girl...the movie house..the germans..and the bastards..converge into a bloody climax that will be interesting to see fully realized. My only nitpick with Tarantino's story is that "The Bastards" seem more of supporting characters that driving the movie. I would like to have seen MORE Dirty Dozen...LESS...Cinema Paradisio........My other concern is that being a "period" piece, Tarantino will not be able to fully utilize his brilliant work using classic songs and soundtracks to enhance the cool factor of the film. My hope is that he would use classic themes and music from great war films like: THE DIRTY DOZEN-THE DEVIL'S BRIGADE-THE LONGEST DAY. I think that would help. Brad Pitt has been mentioned for the lead...I could see it. One could only pray that the role of the projectionist would go to Sam Jackson....OOH LA LA...Then we would have a film! Any Hoo.....I'm there..OPENING DAY!
